Beatweek Best Wireless Speaker for 2013

Wireless speakers come in all shapes and sizes and prices, but Boston Acoustics is clearly targeting the high end with its MC200 Air. The system is based on Apple’s AirPlay technology, which allows users to pair it up via Wi-Fi with their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or iTunes-enabled computer. While the oval cylinder unit is more than a foot long, it’s only about six inches tall and about three inches deep.

The moderate size of the unit turns out to be a bit of misdirection, as the audio emanating from it is super high quality and can be turned to neighbor-angering volumes without losing any fidelity. While the mid and upper ranges sound great, the bass in particular sounds crisply enunciated. And that holds true with every genre of music I tested it with.

Like most high end wireless speakers, the MC200 Air has on-board volume buttons, but it lacks buttons for play/pause and next/previous. The good news is that unlike most of its competitors, this product comes with a remote control which includes those very buttons. In an even more rare inclusion, the MC200 Air has an external Wi-Fi antenna which you can flip up for better reception. The product looks better with the antenna folded away, and gets plenty good reception as-is, but the antenna is a nice add-on for users who want to position the speaker at the outer edges of their Wi-Fi network or who need to pass through multiple walls.

I’ve tested systems that are even more expensive and sound even better, but they tend to be significantly larger. That makes the MC200 Air somewhat uniquely positioned as a medium sized AirPlay speaker which delivers premium audio without taking up too much surface space.
